The staff and treble clef
Lesson 4 of 14 · Beginner · Lines E G B D F and spaces F A C E.
The staff
Music is written on a staff: five lines with four spaces between them. Every line and every space is one note.
Going up the staff means going right on the keyboard, one white key per step: line, space, line, space…
The treble clef
The curly sign at the start is the treble clef. It's also called the G clef: its curl wraps around the second line from the bottom, which is G4, the G just above middle C.
The treble clef is used for higher notes, mostly played by the right hand.
Line notes: E G B D F
From the bottom up, the five lines are E G B D F.
A saying helps: "Every Good Boy Does Fine".
Space notes: F A C E
The four spaces, from the bottom up, spell F A C E, like the word "face".
Now you can name any note on the treble staff: find the nearest line or space you know, and count up or down.
Practice
First the sayings.
Read the note on the staff, then press that key.
